Job Description

This role is accountable and responsible for the accounting assessment of new complex/non-standard deals for trades executed in the Americas and Australia, working closely with Finance in the Business and with Derivative Accountant in the same Accounting team. The person will also participate in projects when required, for example the implementation of new accounting standards. This person will follow new deals, new standards, etc. to the system postings in SAP ensure that expectations are met with correct results. As stated, he or she will work very closely with the Derivative Accountant to ensure correct understanding and booking of special situations, especially when manual SAP adjustments are required. He or she will communicate needed changes to footnotes for RDS financial statements and U.S. statutory accounts for several Shell Trading & Supply subsidiaries. Other details include but are not limited to the following:

  • Collaborate with other Technical Accountants to ensure consistency in decisions made not only within Americas/Australia but also with other team members that represent WONA under Trading & Supply

  • Provide technical accounting advice for and review statutory and RDS 20-F footnotes disclosures.

  • Awareness and compliance with Dodd-Frank as needed; assist with response to Compliance or other requests for related analytical review

  • Train and prepare to be a back-up to Derivative Accountant for same regions

  • Work with Risk to ensure they are aware of and understand changes to accounting rules

  • Work with Risk to ensure correct entry/valuation of non-standard deals in order to assess the impact to derivative accounting, as they occur, and communicate effectively understanding with Derivative Accountant

  • Collaboratively work with auditors as needed on quarterly basis for the RDS and statutory accounts

  • Provide trainings to others across the company on accounting standards, updated regularly

  • Actively assist with other departmental and Group initiatives as needed

*Dimensions :

This is an individual contributor role that is key to ensuring that correct decisions are made in regard to accounting for new complex or non-standard deals and resulting financial positions are correctly stated. This is key to our license to operate. This person can make changes to desk procedures as needed, request changes from others as needed and agreed for efficiencies or corrections. Updates to procedures are required to be documented. Changes to SoX controls require line manager approval.


  • Qualified accountant with substantial post qualification experience gained within or outside Shell

  • CPA preferred

  • Previous roles in Trading finance or technical accounting advisory - controller roles will be a strong plus

  • Experience in technical accounting issues, particularly financial instruments, IAS 39 and application of such accounting rules.

  • Able to relate theoretical accounting literature to commercial trading activities and communicate the impact to the trading business and senior management where required.
